After an incredibly fast preseason camp, the huge Valley game is imminent!!! We are extremely excited to be playing Athens who returns a veteran team coming off of a 7-4 season. The two valley teams have not played each other since Waverly's dramatic 4th quarter surge in 2008 resulting in a Waverly 28-7 victory. Big plays by Brian Sewalt, Mark Kuzma, Kevin Gorman, and Ivan Tunnicliff changed a game that was a 7 to 7 barnburner. The incredible game witnessed by an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 people will go down as an all time classic, especially in the eyes of Waverly fans. Athens and Waverly fans will be surely treated to another classic battle regardless of outcome in 2012.
It is exciting to open up with a quality team like Athens. They are a physical team with an enormous amount of athletic talent. They have a QB's dream at reciever and TE positions. At 6'6, 6'5, 6'4, and 6'2 (with blazing speed) they have weapons that create matchup problems every snap. On defense, they blitz and read well with a middle linebacker they protect by alignment who is in on most tackles. As always, Athens is a well coached team and Coach Young finds a multitude of ways to get his playmakers the ball. Look for a variety of screens, reverses, and basic power plays to be the method of operation for Athens on offense, in addition to just throwing it up to the large recievers on go routes and backside posts. They used varied snap counts and keep the defense back on heels.
Waverly will surely learn from this game, good or bad, and grow as a football team preparing us for the season long challenges leading to post season play. For this football team to even have a chance against the overwhelming athletic ability of Athens, we will have to be physical and disciplined.
See you at the game,
